Winds and infalling gas in Lyman break galaxies

چکیده
A model for gas outflows is proposed which simultaneously explains the correlations between the (i) equivalent width of low ionization and Lyα lines, (ii) outflow velocity, and (iii) star formation rate observed in Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). Our interpretation implies that LBGs host short-lived (30 ± 5 Myr) starburst episodes observed at different evolutionary phases. Initially, the starburst powers a hot wind bound by a denser cold shell, which after ≈ 5 Myr becomes dynamically unstable and fragments; afterwards the fragment evolution is approximately ballistic while the hot bubble continues to expand. As the fragments are gravitationally decelerated, their screening ability of the starlight decreases as the UV starburst luminosity progressively dims. LBG observations sample all these evolutionary phases. Finally, the fragments fall back onto the galaxy after ≈ 60 Myr. This phase cannot be easily probed as it occurs when the starburst UV luminosity has already largely faded; however, galaxies dimmer in the UV than LBGs should show infalling gas.

Absorption features of high redshift galactic winds
The environment of high-redshift galaxies is characterized by both wind-driven outflowing gas and gravitationally infalling streams. To investigate such galaxy-IGM interplay we have generated synthetic optical absorption line spectra piercing the volume surrounding a starbursting analog of a Lyman Break Galaxy selected in a z ≈ 3 output from a SPH simulation, including a detailed treatment of m...
متن کاملGalaxies and Intergalactic Matter at Redshift Z ∼ 3: Overview
We present the first results from a survey of the relative spatial distributions of galaxies, intergalactic neutral hydrogen, and intergalactic metals at high redshift. We obtained high-resolution spectra of 8 bright QSOs at 3.1 < z < 4.1 and spectroscopic redshifts for 431 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at slightly lower redshifts. Comparing the locations of galaxies to the absorption lines in th...
متن کاملObservational signatures of feedback in QSO absorption spectra
Models for the formation of galaxies and clusters of galaxies require strong feedback in order to explain the observed properties of these systems. We investigate whether such feedback has observational consequences for the intergalactic medium, as probed in absorption towards background quasars. A typical quasar sight-line intersects one proto-cluster per unit redshift, and significant feedbac...
متن کاملA Stellar Feedback Origin for Neutral Hydrogen in High-Redshift Quasar-Mass Halos
Observations of quasar pairs reveal that quasar host halos at z ∼ 2 have large covering fractions of cool dense gas (& 60% for Lyman limit systems within a projected virial radius). Most simulations have so far failed to explain these large observed covering fractions. We analyze a new set of 15 simulated massive halos with explicit stellar feedback from the FIRE project, covering the halo mass...
متن کاملChemodynamics of Lyman Alpha Emitters, Lyman Break Galaxies and Elliptical Galaxies
We report an ultra-high-resolution simulation that follows evolution from the earliest stages of galaxy formation through the period of dynamical relaxation. The bubble structures of gas revealed in our simulation (< 3 × 10 years) resemble closely the high-redshift Lyman α emitters (LAEs). After 10 years these bodies are dominated by stellar continuum radiation and look like the Lyman break gal...
